Heart-stopping pictures show the moment a hero police officer stopped a lorry tumbling off a motorway bridge with his bare hands.

PC Martin Willis was pictured clinging on to the wheel of the HGV as it teetered on the edge of a motorway bridge over the A1 in West Yorkshire.

PC Willis' heart-stopping actions meant emergency crews could free the driver trapped inside the lorry's cab.

He wrote on Twitter that he had to hold onto the vehicle for 15 minutes to prevent it from swaying in the wind.

The officer, who is known as “Motorway Martin” to his followers, said that he "couldn’t begin to describe his relief” when the firefighters finally arrived.

The lorry broke through the motorway barrier and ended up suspended over the bridge near Leeds following the accident that appears to have been caused by icy conditions on Friday.

PC Willis was praised by fellow officers for his quick reaction.

"Your superman cape isn't in this photo though! Must have come off in the fracas," colleague PC Adam Pace‏ tweeted.

The driver of the vehicle was taken to hospital with serious but not life threatening injuries, police said.

Officers described the incident as a “terrifying ordeal”.
