Homes in Surrey and Sussex were shaken by a seventh earthquake in just three months which measured 3.0 on the Richter scale.

The tremor was felt in Newdigate, Dorking, Horley and Charlwood in Surrey and Crawley and Horsham in West Sussex, according to the British Geological Survey (BSG).

Since April 1, six other earthquakes have been detected in a same area. The latest was the strongest to date.

The BSG said it hit at 10.53am on Thursday but did confirm further details.

On its website it linked the incidents to “hydrocarbon exploration or production in the Weald” however it was unable to “categorically” say this was a direct cause.

One person wrote on Twitter: "Wow we actually just had an earthquake in Crawley, thought I was going crazy."

Another said: "I'm in Dorking and the office just shook. Not another Surrey earthquake, surely?? The end is nigh."

The BGS said people reported feeling a "large impact then two to three seconds of shaking" while others describing the tremors as "like two huge explosions".
