Police delivered takeaways after a delivery rider was knocked off his scooter by a tree branch that fell on top of him.

The worker was trapped under the bike with a badly broken arm in Banstead, Surrey, on Friday night.

But after calling for the emergency services, he managed to direct Surrey Police officers to his remote location in Park Road around 10pm.

After an ambulance took the injured driver to hospital, Sergeant Chris Schultze delivered the food to the customer’s address for him.

The force’s road policing unit revealed the drama in a series of tweets, adding the hashtag “service”.

They added: “One of our controllers stayed on the line with the rider as he waited for us to arrive.

“He was a bit unsure of his exact location, laying trapped under his scooter, in a great deal of pain and in the pitch black.

“But he was reassured help was coming by the controller #hiddenhero.”

Members of the public praised officers on Twitter - and joked about the situation once they realised the rider would make a full recovery.

Andy Batchelor wrote: “Well done guys, but I'm still waiting for you to deliver my curry.”

Another said: “Can I order a pepperoni pizza with extra cheese please?”

Steve Wilson asked: “Did you get a tip?” to which the officers quickly replied “no”.

Russell Whelan tweeted: “I bet the customers got a shock. Order pizza and you get two coppers on your doorstep.”

One woman named Jo added: “Well done to all those involved. That’s above and beyond. Hope he recovers quickly.”

The police confirmed that their insurance "covers any purpose our role requires" when asked by social media users, and said no tip was received for delivering the package, containing soup, which Sgt Schultze did on foot.
