Suspicious package closes M-way

12 April 2012

One person was arrested after the discovery of a suspicious package on a coach forced the closure of a stretch of the M62 motorway.

Police closed the motorway between junctions four at Rocket and six at Tarbock Island following a "disturbance" on the National Express 380 service from Liverpool to Manchester at about 7.20am.

The bomb squad was called in and later declared the package safe.

The westbound carriageway was later reopened to traffic but the eastbound carriageway remained closed for a time as officers attempted to remove the broken-down coach.

A Merseyside Police spokesman said: "We were called following a disturbance on a coach and the discovery of a suspicious package. That package has since been declared safe.

"One person has been detained in connection with the disturbance."
