Talks in bid to avert BA strike

12 April 2012

Talks aimed at averting a strike by thousands of British Airways cabin crew have resumed with time running out on avoiding travel misery for tens of thousands of passengers.

The airline's chief executive Willie Walsh was leading the company's negotiators in the meeting with Transport and General Workers Union officials including its general secretary Tony Woodley.

Neither side made any comment after day-long negotiations on Saturday although unofficial sources said some progress had been made.

Thousands of stewards and stewardesses are due to strike on Tuesday and Wednesday in the bitter row over sickness absence, pay and staffing.

The union has called two further three-day strikes next month unless the deadlock is broken.

Meanwhile it has been learned that BA is offering to pay taxi fares up to £100 for workers refusing to join next week's strike.

BA has cancelled all passenger flights out of Heathrow for the duration of the strike and has announced that no domestic or European flights will operate from Gatwick Airport.

Customers have been allowed to claim a full refund, rebook their flight or have been booked onto another airline.

BA also warned services will be affected either side of the official industrial action leading to disruption to flights on Monday evening and Thursday morning.

An extra call centre has been opened by BA, staffed by 100 workers to deal with the thousands of calls being made by passengers every day.
