TalkTalk down: Thousands of customers across UK unable to access internet amid issues with network

Thousands of people were left unable to access to the internet due to issues with the TalkTalk network.

There was a huge spike in the number of people reporting problems with the internet service provider on Friday morning according to tracking website Down Detector.

A spike of 32,590 reports of broadband outages were reported at around 11am on Friday.

TalkTalk posted a statement about the outage on its official Twitter page at 11.36am saying the issue has been resolved.

"We're aware that some customers were unable to access certain websites for a short period earlier today," said a TalkTalk spokesperson.

"The issue has now been resolved and we apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused."

During the outage, TalkTalk's Twitter page was flooded with reports from frustrated users who were unable to access the internet.

Some suggested that this was the third time in weeks they had been unable to access the internet for a short period of time.

Laura Smith said in response to TalkTalk's statement: "My internet has just gone down again! This is the third time in as many weeks."

Earlier TalkTalk said email, video and applications such as Microsoft Teams appeared to be "unaffected" by the outage.

The outage came as thousands of users across the country rely on their broadband connections to work and study from home during the coronavirus lockdown.

Earlier this month, Ofcom said broadband providers had managed to hold up against a surge in demand, with download speeds only falling an average of 2 per cent.

The communications regulator measured broadband performance for 3,481 users at the beginning and end of March, to compare results before and after lockdown started.

Despite an increase in usage, data suggests the average download speed remained stable, dropping only 2 per cent, although some networks suffered the effects of increased use more than others.
