Teacher in court over sex with girl

12 April 2012

A teacher who had sex with a 13-year-old girl he met on the internet is set to be sentenced.

Matthew Knott, 24, pleaded guilty at Manchester Crown Court last month to sexual activity with a child and meeting a child following sexual grooming. The offences were carried out in May this year.

Knott met the girl, who cannot be identified but was not a pupil at his school, on at least two occasions.

He denied one count of rape.

Knott, of Miles Platting, Manchester, taught science at Elton High School in Bury, north Manchester.

He joined the school in September last year and it is believed to have been his first teaching job.

Bury Metropolitan Borough Council said Knott was suspended from the school when the allegations emerged and parents received a letter from the headteacher about the incident.
