Team GB kit designer Stella McCartney counts the gold after record profits year

Team GB kit designer Stella McCartney today set a new personal financial best as record profits were revealed for her brand, while her pay and dividend package soared to £3.34 million.

Latest accounts show that last year was the most successful year for the eponymous label created in 2001 by McCartney, with pre-tax profits up 16 per cent to £3.29 million on turnover up 19 per cent at £21 million.

The designer won huge critical acclaim for her creation of the British Olympic team’s wardrobe for the London 2012 Games, and gold-winning track cyclist Victoria Pendleton, silver medallist gymnast Louis Smith and Paralympian gold swimmer Ellie Simmonds were at her summer 2013 catwalk show on Monday for Paris Fashion Week.

In its report on the year, the company said the brand “has now truly arrived on the world stage with unique appeal” and is well-placed to survive the “bleak economic environment”.

The success allowed the company to pay £3 million dividend, split equally between its two shareholders — McCartney and the luxury goods giant, Gucci. It is only the second time in its history that the company, which only broke into profit in 2006, has paid a dividend.

In the previous year, Gucci and the daughter of former Beatle Sir Paul McCartney shared £2 million.

On top of the dividend, the highest-paid director — assumed to be Stella McCartney — received remuneration and pension fund contributions totalling £1.84 million, up from £1.66 million in 2010.

Frederick Lukoff, president and chief executive officer of Stella McCartney, said: “We’re still growing healthily, although we’re remaining vigilant about the external environment. There is room to grow and we are optimistic.” The results include takings from the flagship Mayfair store in Bruton Street, and the global management of the Stella McCartney brand. They do not include the nine overseas stores and wholesale revenue.

A second London outlet opened in the Fulham Road in March.

Despite her record-breaking year, McCartney still has some way to go before catching up with her father’s fortune.

Sir Paul, 69, is now worth an estimated £665 million, and is third-placed in the Sunday Times Rich List of Britain’s wealthiest musicians.
