Tesco has issued a recall notice to customers due to one of its staple Christmas dinner items having "a possible presence of moths".

The Tesco Finest Apple & Cranberry Stuffing Mix (130g) is potentially "unsafe to eat" and unfit for human consumption.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has flagged the issue with the product on its website, urging purchasers "not to eat it. Instead, return it to the store from where it was bought for a full refund".

A receipt is not required for reimbursement of the roughly £2 vegetarian product the supermarket giant has said. It apologised for any inconvenience caused. The product will have a best-before date of September 2024.

One user on X, formerly known as Twitter, jokingly wrote of the item: "You can take it back for a full refund without a receipt as apparently it ‘may contain moths.’ Or just keep it away from any lights, please."

The mixture, with servings for six, has received an overall 3.6-star rating for quality from Tesco customers. Some have described it as "sludgy and tasteless", while others have hailed it a "first-class product". Multiple food alerts have been made this year and the risks they pose must be observed. One of Tesco's more recent recalls was in November. This said that many batches of Tesco's Growers Harvest Garden Peas with best-before dates of January to April 2025 may contain a type of berry making it unsafe to eat.

The FSA, which is responsible for protecting public health in relation food in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, has noted: "If there is a problem with a food product that means it should not be sold, then it might be 'withdrawn' (taken off the shelves) or 'recalled' (when customers are asked to return the product).

"The FSA issues Product Withdrawal Information Notices and Product Recall Information Notices to let consumers and local authorities know about problems associated with food."
