Three-quarters of workers want split between home and the office after lockdown, survey shows

Almost eight in 10 of business leaders agreed and suggested their workforce would benefit from greater flexibility

Three-quarters of employees would like to split their week to spend half the time in the office and half working remotely, new research shows.

Data from the Adecco Group, an HR company, suggests many employees have enjoyed remote working during the pandemic and would like to have more flexibility in the future.

The survey of 8,000 workers based in eight countries around the world revealed three-quarters — or 74 per cent — of employees wanted a mix of office-based and remote working.

Almost eight in 10 — or 77 per cent — of business leaders agreed and suggested their workforce would benefit from greater flexibility.

More than two thirds (69 per cent) of workers said they thought the 40-hour working week was outdated, and would prefer a “results-driven work” model whereby contracts are based on delivering work rather than hours spent working.

Some 74 per cent of leaders also suggested the working week could be revisited.

The study also found emotional intelligence was important to workers — with many suggesting their managers could be better in the area.

Over a quarter (28 per cent) of those questioned said their mental well-being had worsened due to the pandemic, with only one in 10 rating their managers highly on their ability to support their emotional health.

Alain Dehaze of Adecco Group said: “The world of work will never return to the ‘normal’ we knew before. Employers have an opportunity to hit reset on traditional workplace practices — many of which have remained largely unchanged since the industrial revolution. This research highlights that employee attitudes have shifted.”
