Tories maintain lead over Labour

Two new opinion polls show David Cameron's Conservatives maintaining a lead over Labour
12 April 2012

The Tories continue to maintain their lead over Labour - although without the backing to give David Cameron an overall Commons majority - according to two new opinion polls.

A YouGov survey for The People puts the Conservatives on 40%, nine points ahead of Labour on 31% with the Lib Dems on 18%; while a Bpix poll for The Mail on Sunday puts the Tories on 39%, Labour on 30% and the Lib Dems on 18%.

The papers calculate that the figures would still leave Mr Cameron eight or nine seats short of an overall majority if they were replicated at the general election.

YouGov interviewed 2,044 adults online between January 26 to 28. Bpix interviewed 1,524 people on January 29 and 30.
