UDA to announce end to weapons

The UDA is set to announce it has completed decommissioning its weapons
12 April 2012

Northern Ireland's largest loyalist paramilitary group will announce on Wednesday that it has completed decommissioning its weapons.

The Ulster Defence Association (UDA) is expected to give details at a meeting in Belfast.

It has been working with political leaders and the Independent International Commission on Decommissioning (IICD) for some time.

Last year the Commission said it was given assurances from the mainstream UDA's five so-called "brigades" and the South East Antrim grouping that they would complete their decommissioning by the end of the IICD's mandate next month.

The UDA is one of the most notorious paramilitary groupings and was responsible for many conflict murders.

Frankie Gallagher, who speaks for the Ulster Political Research Group (UPRG) which advises the UDA, said: "There will be a press conference by the UPRG where the UDA is expected to make a major statement on the current situation."

The UDA decommissioned a small quantity of weapons last June, but there has been speculation about splits within the organisation over the issue.

The IICD report said it had met all the mainstream UDA's "brigades" and was told there was no difference of opinion.

Earlier this year Northern Ireland Secretary Shaun Woodward warned that legislation, which set a deadline of next month for the completion of decommissioning, would not be renewed.
