Health secretary Sajid Javid has hailed the country’s latest inoculation figures as a “phenomenal achievement.”

Mr Javid, who recently stepped up to the job after Matt Hancock resigned, thanked “the team” and everyone who has come forward for their jab.

He tweeted: “More than 45 million adults across the UK have now had at least one vaccine dose. This is a phenomenal achievement - thank you to the team and everyone who has come forward for their jab.”

Government data lifted the lid on the success of the vaccine rollout.

A total of 78,254,768 doses have been given out in total, including 45,013,503 people across the UK who have now been vaccinated with a first dose.

As many as 33,241,265 Brits have had both doses.

It comes as the coronavirus reproduction number, or R value, in England dropped slightly and is between 1.1 and 1.3, according to the latest Government figures.

In comparison, it was between 1.2 and 1.4 last week.

R represents the average number of people each Covid-19 positive person goes on to infect.

When the figure is above 1, an outbreak can grow exponentially but when it is below 1, it means the epidemic is shrinking.

An R number between 1.1 and 1.3 means that, on average, every 10 people infected will infect between 11 and 13 other people.
