UK weather forecast: Brits braced for heavy downpours with weekend set to end in washout before glorious sunshine returns

Brits are bracing themselves for heavy downpours with the weekend set to end in a washout before glorious sunshine returns.

Rain will lash much of the UK over the course of Saturday as dismal weather, which will include thunderstorms and hail, sets in.

However forecasters say sunshine will return to southern and central parts by Tuesday while temperatures, which fell close to freezing in the north of Scotland on Saturday, will continue to climb.

The unsettled conditions come after the country basked in a prolonged heatwave throughout last month, sparking hosepipe bans and causing raging grass fires.

Met Office forecaster Emma Smith told the Standard: “A band of rain is moving in from the south west. It will move into more central areas this evening.

“London will start to get rain from 7pm onwards and the rain will continue overnight, heavy a times.

“Overnight will not see temperatures fall as low as last night, about 16 or 17C in central and southern areas.

"There will be further rain throughout the day tomorrow for much of the country, it could be quite heavy in places, the only brighter periods will be in central areas, Wales, the south east.

"Temperatures will reach 21 or 22C at best."

As the grey weather remains on Monday, thunder storms and hail will threaten a large swathe of the east and as far as London and Kent.

"The weather will remain unsettled into next week, with sun and showers. There will be a risk of hail and thunder in the east, East Anglia, London, Kent," Ms Smith said.

"At this point high pressure starts to build in the south and low pressure in the north east.

"As a result central and southern areas will be the best of the conditions, sunshine and temperatures as high as 25C, while the north west will see further outbreaks of rain and strong winds."
