Storm Callum has descended on the UK with some areas facing the possibility of a month’s worth of rain in just 36 hours.

The storm made its way across areas overnight on Thursday and many have woken up to a bleak outlook on Friday.

As it swept in from the west there were winds of up to 76mph in the Isles of Scilly, 68mph measured in Orlock Head and 60mph recorded elsewhere.

“Everywhere across the UK will be windy today,” said Met Office forecaster Becky Mitchell.

She said the areas to be worst affected are those the west of Scotland, the north and south west of England, as well as south Wales.

There is an amber weather warning in the latter, as it is expected to see the worst of the storm.

“There will be a lot of heavy and persistent rain in south Wales.

“High grounds could see in excess of 150mm.

“So some places could see about a month of rainfall in about a day and a half,” said Ms Mitchell.

She also warned of the possibility of “large waves” in coastal areas.

For London specifically, she said there was the potential for rain on Friday, but temperatures could reach around 22C which is above average for this time of year.

Looking ahead, the weather expert stated that it is likely to stay unsettled for at least a week.

“For at least the next week or so the general theme of things is unsettled,” she said.

The weather warning for south Wales remains in place until 6pm on Saturday, with the potential for flood water to post a “danger to life”.

The forecast deluge poses a risk of communities being cut off by flooding.

High winds are expected to cause disruption.

The Met Office also issued a series of weather warnings stretching from the north-west coast of Scotland to Land's End, including Northern Ireland.

These broader yellow rain and wind warnings that include parts of north-west and south-west England, western Scotland and Northern Ireland will remain in place until midnight on Friday.
