Britons can expect more cooler weather this week, with frost forming in some regions and temperatures struggling to reach the mid-teens throughout.

There will be plenty of sunshine around on Tuesday but some scattered showers will fall on parts northern England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Gales of up to 35mph will batter the east coast on Wednesday, bringing a chillier feel, with temperatures not expected to rise much further than 12C.

But by the weekend the country could see the return of finer weather after Brits sizzled in 26C heat at the weekend. The mercury expected to peak at about 21C this Sunday.

Met Office meteorologist John Griffiths said there won’t be the wall-to-wall sunshine seen earlier this month but that Britons could expect some fine weather throughout the more “chilly” week ahead.

"There will be a chilly feel to the weather compared to what we’ve had. Today [Tuesday] it be a dry but frosty start with plenty of sunshine around but further north there will be scattered showers and in Scotland there will be more bigger outbreaks of rain, moving southwards.”

He added: “It looks like it will start warming up this weekend though… Temperatures could reach about five or six degrees above average. On Sunday [the mercury] could be touching 20 or maybe 21C.”

It comes after temperatures peaked on Saturday at 24.9C in London, and remained widely into the 20s for many parts of the UK.

The warm weather prompted many people to flock to parks and the seaside amid the coronavirus lockdown. Police in the South East reported having had to move hundreds of people on from beaches.

But Sunday saw maximum temperatures drop by around 10C across the country, with a cloud front moving southwards – though some southern parts remained warm.
