The US is reducing the number of its troops in Pakistan at the country's request after the killing of terror mastermind Osama bin Laden.

Pentagon spokesman Marine Col David Lapan said there were more than 200 US military personnel in Pakistan, but provided no details on how many had been withdrawn since Pakistan made its request.

Col Lapan later said the staff who had been pulled out were troops who had been training Pakistani forces in counter-uprising skills.

He did not say whether Pakistan had set a specific new limit on the US numbers.
