US snubs friendly fire inquest

12 April 2012

No American witnesses have been put forward to give answers over the death of British soldier Matty Hull in a friendly fire inquest, it has been revealed.

Despite repeated requests from the Lance Corporal of Horse's widow, Susan Hull, Oxfordshire Assistant Deputy Coroner Andrew Walker and Constitutional Affairs Minister Harriet Harman, the US has failed to provide further assistance.

The coroner had wanted to hear further evidence, when he reopened the inquest on Monday, about how two pilots who opened fire on L/Cpl Hull's armoured vehicle convoy in southern Iraq four years ago, were trained before they were sent into combat.

At a pre-inquest hearing last month, Mr Walker agreed to take a "pragmatic" approach not to show in open court a cockpit recording of US pilots in A10 tank-buster planes opening fire on the convoy, to ensure the Americans provided further information for his inquiry.

Geraldine McCool, representing Mrs Hull, criticised the "lack of co-operation" of the US government but added that the Hull family would rather the coroner co-operated with the US over the video to prevent further delay.

She said she wanted to ensure the US provided a witness to interpret the video, and transcripts of the US investigation into the pilots' training hours.

Transcripts of interviews with the pilots already read to Oxford Coroner's Court show that the two pilots had no conflict experience.

The inquest opened on Monday with the Coroner, the Hull family and Ministry of Defence officials watching the cockpit recording, which is approximately an hour long and was brought to court by an MoD official on a laptop computer.

The public and media were barred from this showing, despite the fact that extracts of the recording have been broadcast on national television and the internet since the Sun newspaper obtained a leaked copy.

It is not yet clear whether Mr Walker will allow the public to hear the questions the family have about the recording.
