This is the bizarre moment firefighters turn their jets on four "randy" bulls to stop them attacking an RSPCA worker as he battles to save a stricken cow.

The unusual scene played out in Alfreton, Derbyshire, after police called the animal charity to free a heifer whose head was wedged between two trees on a steep bank.

"The poor cow was already very weak and dehydrated, and was surrounded by four large uncastrated male Limousin bulls," an RSPCA spokeswoman explained.

"As any rescue attempt would be perilous due to the angry bulls, the RSPCA called on Matlock and Alfreton Fire and Rescue Service to help keep them away with jets of water."

RSPCA animal welfare officer Andy Snowdon said: "On top of the steep conditions, there were also four large, angry bulls standing guard over the cow, so I am very grateful to the fire service for attending.

"Their jets of water helped keep me safe while we winched the trees apart and managed to free the cow.

"I love all animals, but I have to admit having four large randy bulls circling around me was quite an interesting experience - and once I don't want to repeat any time soon."

The footage, released by the charity today, comes as the RSPCA announces 2014 figures.

It rescued more than 125,000 animals from "dangerous and distressing situations" last year, the numbers reveal.

The cow was checked over by vets and RSPCA doctors following her ordeal on June 20, but is now said to be recovering well.
