We need 'awful' Jedward, says Lydon

12 April 2012

Former Sex Pistols star John Lydon has praised Jedward - for being so bad they made other acts "shine".

The punk idol said the pair - dumped from The X Factor at the weekend - were "just ridiculous".

But Lydon insisted there was a place for the band in the music scene.

"You must have as many awful acts out there as possible, because that's the only way you can shine like a diamond in the mudpack," he said. "So I'm all for the competition, me."

Speaking to Absolute Radio's Christian O'Connell, Lydon was dismissive of Katie Price who had been a contestant on ITV's I'm A Celebrity when he, too, had taken part in the show in 2004.

He said the viewers' continual votes for her to take part in bushtucker trials showed the public's feelings for her.

Lydon - who has reformed his band Public Image Limited for a series of shows next month - did not get on with the glamour girl when they were in the jungle.

He said: "Now the truth comes out - oh, you poor dear, we all hate you".

"Fair play to her, she's done really well in her life - having done nothing. I mean, she's a coat-hanger."

And speaking of Price's romance with ex-husband Peter Andre which began in the jungle, he joked: "Wasn't it lovely to see romance blossom? Well, it was more like watching mushrooms grow on a rotten log".
