Bronwen Weatherby10 January 2020

Britons are braced for extreme winds of up to 70mph and torrential rain heading into the weekend after snow blanketed parts of England.

Areas of Cumbria and Northumberland were pictured covered in snow as temperatures plummeted.

Nighttime frost was expected overnight and into Friday as chilly temperatures expected over the coming days bringing with it the potential for snow showers on higher ground.

However, temperatures still remain above average for the time of year, according to meteorologists.

"Sunday will see similar temperatures but, it will be tempered by wet and windy conditions making it feel colder."

The Met Office has issued weather warnings for heavy rain in Scotland which will develop from Friday and into Saturday.
