Will it be a white Christmas anywhere in the UK this year?

Tim Baker24 December 2019

The UK will only be dreaming of a white Christmas this year, with forecasters confirming there is "no prospect" of snow on December 25.

The Met Office says even the Highlands are unlikely to get a dusting this Wednesday.

The last time snow fell heavily at this time of the year was back in 2010, when wintry weather shut down airports and caused travel chaos.

This year, forecasters say the country can look forward to bit of fog and then a dry day with sunny spells.

Temperatures as presents are opened will be as low as minus -3C in Scotland and 0C in England.

As the day warms up, northern parts of the country will reach around 7C and the south around 8C.

Grahame Madge, Met Office spokesman, said: “There is no prospect of a white Christmas.

Overnight into Christmas there will be some frosts and there might be some ice.

“Snow is unlikely, even in the highlands. This is due to a ridge of high pressure.”

There has been a widespread coating of snow on only four of the last 51 Christmases, according to the Met Office.

Before the calm of December 25, parts of the UK can expect thunderstorms to roll in across south Wales and south-west England on Christmas Eve.

A yellow weather warning is in place until 1pm on December 24.

The Met Office warns that this could cause damage to some buildings, and lead to delays on the rail and road. It comes after a turbulent week for Brits, with floods and even a tornado seen in the south of the UK.

2017 was technically recorded as a white Christmas by the forecaster after 11 per cent of weather stations reported snowfall, however none said that snow had settled.

In 2018 there was no record of snow falling at any weather station in the UK.

The Met Office has to record a single snowflake falling at any one of a number of observation locations in the UK including Buckingham Palace, Edinburgh Castle and the Millennium Stadium, in order to class a Christmas as white.

This has happened on 38 of the last 54 Christmas Days.
