A woman was told to go on a diet by a hotel owner after she wrote scathing reviews online slamming the “horrendous” smell and “revolting” lack of cleanliness.

Emily Chance was sent a text message accusing her of “hating everyone and everything” by the Nelcon Hotel staff member after leaving a review on Booking.com.

She and her husband Michael paid £38 for a two-night stay at the Blackpool hotel last month to celebrate their second wedding anniversary.

In a September 30 post, Ms Chance rated the lodging 3.8 out of 10.

She described the smell as “horrendous”, adding the shower “had grime in the corners”, towels “weren't changed” and mats “weren't maintained either which sickened me”.

Nelcon Hotel responded publicly to the review, asking her: “Can I ask, just what did you expect for what you paid?”

They added that “most of what you describe I do not recognise” and “I think possibly you were expecting a four-star hotel”.

Owner Ken Evans then sent a message to Ms Chance’s phone, calling her a “nasty piece of work who probably should be put on a diet”.

Ms Chance retaliated by taking to Trip Advisor, writing: “I wrote a review on Booking.com about this disgusting hotel only for one of the staff to text me directly to my phone and say I need to go on a diet. How rude.

“This place was absolutely revolting. The state of the place is, well it's ridiculous.

“The carpets are filthy, the window sills and windows are filthy and there is mould all up the wall.

“I don't appreciate paying money for a dump like this.”

The hotel later said it stood by the text message, branding Ms Chance’s reviews “disgusting”.
