Stress is now the top health and safety concern in the workplace, research has found.

A poll by the Trades Union Congress (TUC) has stated that pressures at work have reached record levels.

It found that 70 per cent of health and safety representatives believe stress is the main health and safety hazard at work.

The problem is even more prevalent in the public sector, with 93 per cent of health reps citing it in the top five work-place hazards.

Workers in the education sector and health services are also badly hit by stress and anxiety.

TUC general secretary Frances O’Grady said: “The message from the shop floor is clear, stress is becoming a bigger and bigger problem.

“Pressures of long working hours and low job security are being felt in workplaces across the UK.”

TUC has published the study to coincide with World Mental Health Day today, urging employers to reduce or remove work which could make employees ill.
