The world's largest rodent has been spotted roaming around a golf course in Essex.

The Argentinian capybara was seen close to the eighth hole at North Weald Golf club.

Golfers initially mistook the animal for a wild boar but the species was identified after video footage of the South American creature was analysed.

It was later revealed that the capybara, which can grow up to four feet in length and is a close relative of the guinea pig, had escaped from nearby Ashlyns Farm Shop.

In a statement on its website, the golf club said: "On Sunday the 16th March, golfers approaching the 8th tee stumbled across something that looked quite out of place on the course.

"Kevin and Barbara Walters and John and Pat Miles were about to play their tee shots when Kevin saw what he thought was a wild boar meandering around the pond.

"After a quick phone call to the clubhouse, Angus and Hamish arrived at the scene with cameras at the ready to capture the rare sight."

Rob Dixon, manager at Ashlyns Farm Shop, told the Telegraph they had so far been unable to capture the animal despite several attempts.

He said: "We keep on trying to catch it, but as soon as we try and catch it, it’s moved on or it jumps in the river and shoots off. Next time we’ve got to get a vet out and try and tranquillise it."
