A US politician has been arrested over the murder of a journalist - whose expose piece contributed to his primary election loss in June, it has been reported.

Clark county public administrator Robert Telles was arrested on suspicion of fatally stabbing the Las Vegas Review-Journal reporter Jeff German.

Las Vegas police said that Mr German died on Friday and a search of Mr Telles’s home on Wednesday provided evidence to identify him as a suspect in the case.

Mr Telles, a 45-year-old elected government official, was wheeled out of his home on a stretcher and put into an ambulance - the Las Vegas Review Journal has reported.

Mr German, 69, who had covered the area for more than 40 years, was said to be pursuing a potential follow-up story in the weeks before his death.

His previous work detailed allegations of bullying and mismanagement in Mr Telles’s office, as well as allegations of an “inappropriate relationship” between Mr Telles and a staffer.

Democrat politician Mr Telles lost a local inter-party vote after the stories broke. He furiously denied the allegations - adding a section to his website called “the truth,” where he gave his own account and called Mr German a “bully”.

Las Vegas police have released a picture of the suspect, whose body is entirely clothed.

The force also released an image of a vehicle linked to the incident. The Las Vegas Review-Journal said their reporters: “Spotted Mr Telles in the driveway of his home with a vehicle matching that description.”

The police has added that it “is currently serving search warrants,” but has not formally commented since.
