A woman has died in a house fire in east London.

The London Fire Brigade were called to the blaze that ripped through the ground floor of a terraced house in Humberstone Road at 11am on Saturday morning.

Firefighters in breathing apparatus found the woman in the house but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

One neighbour said: “The woman who lived there didn’t get out much, it’s so sad. We think she lived there alone. Everyone on the road had to be totally evacuated.”

Station Officer Karl Smith, who was at the scene, said: “On arrival, fire crews were faced with a well-developed fire on the ground floor of the house.

“Crews quickly extinguished the blaze but sadly one woman was declared dead at the scene.”

Fire crews from Plaistow, East Ham and Stratford fire stations attended the scene and had the fire under control within 25 minutes.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation by the brigade and the Metropolitan Police.
