A half-naked hero hit headlines in Australia after chasing a driver who allegedly crashed into a fish and chip shop.

Daniel McConnell was woken up by the huge smash which destroyed his “mate’s mum’s” shop in Hendra, north-east Brisbane, in the early hours of Thursday morning.

He told Australian news crews how he leapt from his bed with “just his jocks on” to find out what had happened.

He spoke of how the man fled after Mr McConnell asked him: “What are you doing, mate? You can’t be leaving the scene.”

Speaking on the Today Show, the father-of-four said the driver told him “not to be a hero”.

However, Mr McConnell, who has been branded “Australian of the year” by breakfast TV viewers, said: “He decided he is going to scoot up the road and I said "nah, it's not going on like that" so I just jumped in my car.

“All I had was me jocks on and I was chasing him up the street and I was just like, mate.”

He then described how he drove after the suspect until police officers took over.

Viewers took to twitter to discuss the comical interview.

Dane Cooper wrote: “Aussiest. Interview. Ever. What a legend!”
