Tunisia’s ambassador today appealed to Britain to let holidaymakers return, saying his country was now “as safe as London”.

Nabil Ammar said the Foreign Office should show “solidarity” by cancelling travel advice put up after the 2015 terrorist attack in which 30 Britons were killed on a beach.

The coroner at the inquest into the murders carried out by an extremist gunman was set to deliver his conclusions today on whether “neglect” by holiday firms and hotels contributed to their deaths.

Mr Ammar said Britain should show solidarity to Tunisia because both countries had suffered from terrorist attacks.

Asked on BBC radio 4 if he would take his own family and friends on holiday there, he replied: “Definitely. Tunisia is as safe as London.”

The senior diplomat went on: “What we are saying is that we should be treated fairly. We should be treated as all the other countries that have suffered.

“We should show solidarity if we are truly serious about struggling against this horrible thing.”

Gunman Seifeddine Rezgui opened fire in Sousse on June 26 2015, shooting 38 people dead.
