James Foley's mother has attacked the American government for its failure to save her son, the first journalist beheaded by Islamic State fanatics.

Diane Foley said she was “embarrassed and appalled” at the way the authorities had handled the kidnapping of her 40-year-old son, adding: “I really feel our country let Jim down.”

In an interview with CNN, she claimed her family were threatened with prosecution if they tried to raise a ransom. She said: “Jim was killed in the most horrific way. He was sacrificed because of just a lack of coordination, lack of communication, lack of prioritisation. As a family, we had to find our way through this on our own.”

Islamic State released a tape showing Mr Foley’s murder on August 19. A tape showing the killing of journalist Stephen Sotloff emerged two weeks later.
