A UN panel of human rights experts investigating the Syrian conflict says it has documented cases of unlawful killing, torture and abuse by both government forces and rebels.

In a report published today, the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Syria said that forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad have killed people unlawfully during protests in Idlib, Homs, Aleppo, Hama, Damascus, Deraa.

But rebel groups have killed army and security forces and suspected informers after capture.

The UN has put the death toll at more than 9,000 since the uprising began in March last year.

Meanwhile soldiers stormed an apartment in Beirut today, killing a Syrian gunman who had fled there after firing on security forces.

In the past two weeks 10 people have died in Lebanon in clashes linked to the conflict in Syria.
