A six-month old baby girl who was thrown to her death from an apartment in the New York Bronx is the third infant to die from a flat fall in the city since August.
The baby died after plummeting from a sixth-floor apartment in the Fordham Heights neighbourhood yesterday.
Witnesses described the horrifying moment a woman believed to be the baby's mother began dangling the child from the window.
Onlookers are said to have pleaded with her not to drop the baby over the window ledge.
Lizette Rodriguez told local television station WABC: “And then that’s when the neighbors started screaming, ‘No, no, no, no!’”
"They were yelling at her, ‘Don’t do it! Think about it.’”
Three other children who in the apartment at the time of the tragedy were taken to hospital as a precaution but did not require treatment, the Associated Press reported.
A 27-year-old woman, thought to be the baby's mother, was also hospitalised but no charges have been filed against her, police said.
The baby was the third child to die as a result of being thrown from a building in the city within three months.
Last month a newborn girl with her umbilical cord still attached was killed after being tossed from a home in the University Heights neighbourhood.
Her mother was subsequently arrested on murder and manslaughter charges.
And in August, a one-month old baby boy died after his mother allegedly threw him from the window of their home in Queens, reportedly because she wanted to free him of "evil spirits." Police are investigating.
