Two people have been killed and seven others injured in a shooting in North Carolina.

Five people were also hit by vehicles while running away from the incident in northern Charlotte, police said.

The shooting in Beatties Ford Road happened around midnight at an "impromptu block party" as part of ongoing Juneteenth celebrations, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Deputy Chief Johnny Jennings told reporters.

Police had responded to a call about a pedestrian hit and found hundreds of people in the streets, Mr Jennings said.

As emergency services arrived, several shots were fired, scattering the crowd.

Mr Jennings said there was evidence of multiple shooters, but there have been no arrests.

The conditions of the 12 people in hospital were not immediately clear.

Juneteenth, which started on Friday, commemorates when the last enslaved African Americans learned they were free 155 years ago.
