The Belize police officer allegedly shot in the head by Lord Ashcroft’s daughter-in-law told a friend he was going on a date the night he was killed, it was reported today.

Police superintendent Henry Jemmott is said to have joked he would take the woman’s name “to the grave” when the friend asked for details of the meeting.

Mr Jemmott was found hours later floating next to a wooden jetty in the coastal resort of Ambergris Caye. Jasmine Hartin has been charged with manslaughter by negligence and is being held in a prison notorious for its harsh conditions.

The Canadian mother-of-two, 32, is reported to have told detectives she was giving Mr Jemmott a shoulder massage when she handed him his service pistol and it accidentally went off, shooting him on the back of the head.

Aerial photographs of the jetty where the pair were said to have been shows what appears to be a pool of blood. Hartin is the partner of Andrew Ashcroft, the son of billionaire Tory donor Lord Ashcroft. Mr Ashcroft operates several luxury tourist properties in Belize.

According to Mailonline, the 42-year-old officer told a friend last Friday he was going to meet a mystery woman that night. “He was the happiest cop you’ll ever see but he’s always like that. He said, ‘I have a date’,” the friend reportedly said.

“He called the girl. I asked who she was. He joked, ‘that’s my secret, this one I’m taking to my grave’ and he did take it. I’m struggling to cope with that.” Mr Jemmott’s sister has said her brother and Hartin knew each other but there “there was no romantic relationship”.
