The search for the black boxes of the passenger jet carrying 62 people that crashed into the Java Sea intensified today.

More than 20 helicopters, 100 navy ships and boats, and 2,500 rescue personnel have been searching since yesterday.

They have found parts of the plane in the water at a depth of 75 feet and human remains and clothing but no sign of survivors.

The Sriwijaya Air Boeing 737 left Jakarta, Indonesia’s capital, during heavy rain on Saturday but vanished from the radar on its way to Borneo.

Authorities have said signals from the black boxes were detected between islands just north of Jakarta’s coast.  They include the cockpit voice recorder, which contains conversations between pilots, and the flight data recorder, which tracks electronic information such as airspeed, altitude and vertical acceleration. It was hoped the devices would be recovered today.

Indonesia’s transport committee chairman, Soerjanto Tjahjono, said they could provide valuable information to investigators.

It will take three to five days to dry and clean the boxes and download their data, Mr Tjahjono added.
