Bottles of gin had to be recalled across Canada after a batch was found to contain 77 per cent alcohol – nearly twice the advertised amount.

The 1.14 litre bottles of Bombay Sapphire London Dry Gin should have had 40 per cent alcohol content, officials said.

Ontario's Liquor Control Board was the first to report the incident on Tuesday, and traced the problem back to the production line.

"One batch was bottled before correct dilution to achieve the stated 40 per cent alcohol content by volume," the board said in a statement.

"As a result, the affected batch has alcohol content by volume of 77 per cent."

Four other provinces followed, warning people not to drink the gin.

No illnesses associated with consumption of the gin have been reported, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency said.

Bacardi, which distributes Bombay Sapphire, said the affected batch is only believed to have been sold in Canada.

It is the second time this year that a liquor recall has been ordered in the North American country because of a too high alcohol content.

Bottles of Georgia Bay Vodka with 81 per cent alcohol were removed from store shelves in March.
