A Welsh woman has drowned while on holiday in Crete, becoming the third Briton to die in Greece this year.

The 74-year-old woman was found unconscious on the beach of Almyrida in the town of Chania on the island’s north west coast.

Desperate CPR efforts were made to save her life for roughly 30 minutes and she was taken to General Hospital St George where she was pronounced dead.

Chania authorities are conducting an investigation and have ordered an autopsy to be carried out.

The town is one of the largest in Crete with around 108,642 in its municipality. It is a tourist favourite for Britons and has been described as among the most picturesque spots in Greece to visit.

The woman has not been named and no details about her family have been publicised in media reports.

Her demise follows the death of Jack Fenton, who was struck and killed by a helicopter blade while he walked back from a party in Mykonos in July.

That same month an unamed 30-year-old British man slipped and fell from a boat while attempting to anchor it in the island of Nimos. He was knocked unconscious and fell into water before being pulled out by friends and taken to hospital - where he was pronounced dead.

The Foreign Office said: “We are in contact with the local authorities following the death of a British national in Crete.”
