Holidaymakers travelling to Mexico have been warned to take care after dozens of Brits have been stuck down with food poisoning.

Around 49 of the 63 confirmed cases of food poisoning across England, Scotland and Wales as of August 3 related to people who had recently travelled to the country, according to Public Health England.

Those planning on travelling to holiday destinations such as Cancun and Rivera Maya have been warned to be aware of the risk of infection from a food and water bug called Cylospora.

Nick Phin, deputy director of the National Infection Service at Public Health England, said: “We strongly urge people to maintain a high standard of food, water and personal hygiene when travelling to the Riviera Maya coast in Mexico and to be aware of the risk of infection from a food and water bug, Cyclospora."

Infection can cause diarrhoea, stomach cramps, nausea, loss of appetite, fatigue, low-grade fever and weight loss.

Foods most commonly involved are soft fruits like raspberries as well as salad ingredients including coriander, basil and lettuce, the organisation added.
