A deer in Canada had a lucky escape after it was found alive with an arrow sticking out of its head.

Carrot, a whitetail buck living in northern Ontario, was found with the arrow in its head by wildlife photographer, Lee-Anne Carver in northern Ontario.

She told the Guardian that despite his injury, Carrot was “still acting like his normal self”.

“It’s really disturbing," said Ms Carver. "I want to put my hand out there and grab it and say, ‘There, I fixed you, Carrot.’ But that’s not possible.”

Conservation officers advised against removing the arrow because it was likely preventing bleeding.

In an update on Facebook, Ms Carver revealed that Carrot had been shot with a target arrow made out of carbon.

She said officials from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry visited her home on Wednesday and they were successfully able to cut off the top of the bolt, close to the deer’s head.

Ms Carver said the risk of infection remains but "if healing happens as suspected, the arrow will slide out freely and eventually”.

The photographer said Carrot was orphaned as a fawn he has been visiting her backyard for the past three years.

“Carrot is an extraordinary deer,” wrote Ms Carver on Facebook.

“All deer are unique but Carrot has always carried a spirit that was inexplicably noble and affectionate.”

Carrot has gained hundreds of fans via Ms Carver’s Facebook page, Carrot the Magic Deer and the Orange Heart Club.
