Armoured personnel carriers, trucks and a patrol boat were shown crossing the border from neighbouring Shenzhen city for the 22nd rotation of the People’s Liberation Army’s garrison, Xinhua state news agency reported.
Nearly three months of anti-government demonstrations have sparked concerns that the military will be deployed in the semi-autonomous city. The Hong Kong garrison previously published a promotional video with scenes of soldiers facing off with people dressed like protesters.
Experts estimate that the garrison numbers between 8,000 and 10,000 troops split between bases in southern China and a network of former British Army barracks.
China has denounced the protests and accused the United States and United Kingdom of interfering in its affairs in the former British territory. The move comes days before protesters plan to hold a march calling for full democracy for the city.
