California has been forced to shut down again after seeing a record surge of 11,800 coronavirus cases in 24 hours.

Governor Gavin Newsom ordered bars to close and told restaurants, movie theatres, zoos and museums to cease indoor operations.

Gyms, churches and hair salons must close in the 30 worst-hit counties and state prisons are releasing up to 8,000 inmates early to avoid large hotspots.

The huge jump in infections on Monday would put California fifth in the world were it a country, having now recorded nearly 400,000 total cases.

It beats the western state’s previous record of 10,861 cases, set on July 14.

While US President Donald Trump is pressuring states to reopen from lockdown and downplaying the virus' threat, the crisis is worsening across the country.

Florida has reported over 10,000 new cases per day for the last six days in a row, while Texas has reported over 10,000 cases for five out of the last seven days.

California's daily increases have already surpassed the highest daily tally reported by any European country at the peak of the pandemic.

The biggest outbreak in the state is in Los Angeles County, which has recorded nearly 160,000 total cases as of Monday, while hospitals are swelling with Covid-19 patients.

Walt Disney Co's Disneyland Resort in Anaheim has indefinitely suspended plans to reopen its California theme park, but Disney World did reopen in Florida on July 11.

On Monday Mr Trump promised to resume briefings with reporters following the surge.

"We have had this big flare up in Florida, Texas, a couple of other places," he said from the Oval Office. "I'll get involved and we'll start doing briefings."

Earlier this month he claimed the US was "fighting our way out of" the virus and "on the way to a tremendous victory".

He claimed the US had conducted 40 million tests for Covid-19 and that "99 per cent" of the infections are "totally harmless".
