A gunman has opened fire on a crowd in Corsica killing one and injuring at least six others.

The suspect shot at police officers in the Corsican city of Bastia before locking himself inside a nearby apartment, according to reports.

Police have surrounded the building.

Three women and two men including a police officer are among those injured, France 3 reported.

French police said there is no indication the suspect's actions were terror-related.

According to local media, the suspect is a man in his 60s and was known to police because he had trouble with his neighbours in the past.

Police confirmed an officer was among the people injured.

The Haute Corse prefecture said a security perimeter has been set up around the building where the suspect is holed up.
