Cristiano Ronaldo has broken his silence after police reopened an investigation into a sexual assault allegation made against him in 2009, saying he has a clear conscience.

The Portuguese footballer, 33, vehemently denied raping a woman in a Las Vegas hotel room and said he will wait with “tranquillity” for the results of any probe.

In a Twitter post, he wrote: “I firmly deny the accusations being issued against me. Rape is an abominable crime that goes against everything that I am and believe in.

“Keen as I may be to clear my name, I refuse to feed the media spectacle created by people seeking to promote themselves at my expense.

“My clear conscious (sic) will thereby allow me to await with tranquillity the results of any and all investigations.”

Former model Kathryn Mayorga has accused the Juventus striker of attacking her in a hotel room in Las Vegas following a night out nine years ago.

He has previously dismissed the allegations, first reported in Germany’s Der Spiegel magazine, as “fake news”. His lawyers also issued a statement denying the claims in the report.

Las Vegas police yesterday confirmed they had reopened a complaint which was originally made in 2009 at the request of the accuser.

A statement said: "At the time the report was taken, the victim did not provide detectives with the location of the incident or suspect description.

"As of September 2018, the case has been reopened and our detectives are following up on information being provided.”

Ronaldo, the only player to win the Champions League five times and widely regarded as one of the best footballers ever, moved from Real Madrid to Juventus for £99.2m this summer.
