Donald Trump claimed he is a bigger star than anyone who attended the Oscars as he mocked the viewer ratings for this year's awards.

The US President slated the Academy Awards and ridiculed the viewing figures as the lowest rated "in history".

The Oscars attracted 26.5 million viewers in the US, which was down 16 per cent on last year when 33 million people tuned into watch. The ratings do not included digital or mobile viewers.

He tweeted: “Lowest rated Oscars in History. Problem is, we don’t have any Stars anymore- except your President (Just kidding, of course)!”

During this year’s Oscars, host Jimmy Kimmel hit out at the Trump administration.

After the Russian feature Icarus won best documentary, Mr Kimmel referenced the Trump administration’s alleged collusion with Vladimir Putin during the 2016 US election.

The President has denied these allegations.

The host went on to reference evangelical Christian Vice President Mike Pence when talking about the nominated film Call Me By Your Name, a love story between two men.

Mr Kimmel said: “We don’t make movies like ‘Call Me by Your Name’ for money. … We make them to upset Mike Pence.”

Mr Trump has previously hit out at Hollywood actors who have spoken out against him.

In January 2017 he called Meryl Streep the most “overrated actress in Hollywood” after she called him out for mocking a disabled reporter.
