Donald Trump has been named Person of the Year by Time Magazine.

The prestigious magazine named the President-elect as its most influential person of 2016, joining a varied list of figures including Mark Zuckerberg, Pope John Paul II, Martin Luther King Jr, Queen Elizabeth II and Hitler.

He beat shortlisted Nigel Farage, Hillary Clinton and Beyoncé to claim the title.

In a telephone interview on NBC's "Today" show on Wednesday Mr Trump said: “It’s a great honour. It means a lot.”

The President-elect joins a list of figures including Queen Elizabeth II, Churchill and Stalin.

The magazine's managing editor, Nancy Gibbs, said the choice of Mr Trump this year was “straightforward” – and added Democrat Hillary Clinton was the first runner up.

The billionaire businessman shocked the world when he defeated Mrs Clinton in the November election.

In a statement on their website describing the accolade, Time magazine said: “Every December TIME names the person who had the greatest influence, for better or worse, on the events of the year. So which is it this year: Better of worse?

“The challenge for Donald Trump is how profoundly the country disagrees about the answer.”

Other previous winners include Vladimir Putin, Barack Obama, Winston Churchill, Joseph Stalin and Mahatma Gandhi.
