Golfers in Australia watched on in astonishment after their round was interrupted by a four metre python swallowing a wallaby in the middle of the fairway.

The scrub python - Australia's longest snake - was spotted at the weekend on the Paradise Palms Golf Course in Cairns.

As golfers approached the 17th hole, they discovered the animal was in the middle of their path wrapped around the wallaby.

But, according to the BBC, it did not deter golfers used to seeing wildlife on the course from finishing their rounds.

Robert Willemse, who has been a member at the club for 10 years, said: "Everybody was pretty surprised. It's quite an unusual thing to see.

"I was only there for about five minutes, but I heard that the snake did manage to swallow the wallaby and rolled into a dry creek."

The scrub python is one of Australia’s largest terrestrial predators and often preys on small and medium sized mammals.

But biologist from the University of Sydney, Dan Natusch, said they are not a threat to humans.

"Scrub pythons don't see us as prey,” he said.

"Exercise caution insofar as they have very sharp teeth and you don't want to be bitten."
