A family who got scared driving through a crowd full of people dressed as zombies outside a comic book convention ran over a woman leaving her with serious injuries.

Police said the 48-year-old driver was waiting at a crossroads in San Diego on Saturday afternoon with his wife and two children when a large crowd of people, many of them dressed as the living dead, attempted to pass them.

The zombies terrified the children in the black Honda Civic, so the man rolled forward to get through the 250-strong crowd - which included mothers and babies in pushchairs.

Some of the zombies then turned on the family - surrounding the car before climbing on it and smashing the windscreen.

The man sped up to flee the scene, hitting a 64-year-old woman who fell under the car. It is thought she suffered a broken arm and her skin was stripped back to the elbow - exposing bone.

Some witnesses claim they chased the vehicle for several minutes before the driver was eventually stopped by officers.

Police said the driver was not immediately arrested - but was taken in for questioning and an investigation launched. The driver and his family were all reported to be deaf.

San Diego Police Officer David Stafford, said: “The family was scared so the father drove forward again trying to get away from the angry crowd.”

Of the woman’s condition, he added: “Her arm was badly scraped. It’s going to need surgery.”

Comic-Con International is an annual gathering of comic and graphic novel fans.

The ZombieWalk is traditionally held every year and sees hundreds of people take to the streets dressed as the living dead.
