EgyptAir flight MS804: Audio from doomed plane reveals 'frantic attempts to put out fire'

Jamie Bullen5 July 2016

Audio taken from the doomed EgyptAir MS804 flight has suggested attempts to put out a fire on board the jet before it crashed into the Mediterranean Sea.

All 66 people on board the aircraft were killed when it plunged into the ocean as it travelled from Paris to Cairo on May 19.

The cause of the crash has yet to be determined but today it emerged a flight deck recorder indicates a blaze may have broken out on board.

Sources on the investigation committee said frantic attempts to extinguish a fire were possible after studying the recorder.

Earlier analysis showed there had been smoke in the lavatory while signs of high temperature damage and soot were visible on recovered wreckage of the jet.

The recorder has been taken to Cairo this week after being repaired at laboratories as officials try and piece together the plane’s final moments before it crashed.

The device usually captures conversations between pilots, any cockpit alarms and engine noises.

Investigators are to conduct further analysis on the voices contained in the recordings and have not yet ruled out any possibilities as to what caused the crash, sources added.

The development comes after it emerged today a search vessel recovered human remains at the crash site on the floor of the Mediterranean Sea.

The John Lethbridge, belonging to Mauritius-based Deep Ocean Search, was heading to Alexandria port to hand over the remains to coroners and prosecution officials, Egypt’s aircraft accident investigation committee said.

It will return to the crash site to make further checks for any possible remains there, the statement said.
