Europe could be basking in hotter-than-average temperatures well into the autumn after forecasters predicted the warm and dry weather could last until October.

June and July brought exceptionally hot summer conditions for many European countries – with temperatures in the UK hitting the mid-thirties.

And after weeks of scorching weather sparking wildfires and water shortages, forecasters said most of the continent will continue to endure above-normal temperatures from August until October.

Much of Spain has been on a severe alert with the official weather agency warning that temperatures could surpass 40C due to a hot air mass sweeping north from Africa.

The country’s Meteorological Agency said eight provinces in the southern Andalusia region and around Madrid are under high risk because of the heatwave hitting the country from Wednesday.

Authorities are warning against venturing outdoors during the peak sunny hours of the day and have advised citizens to drink water and keep houses and vehicles as cool as possible.

The three-month Europe forecast was published by the Weather Company which provides predictions for the energy and aviation sector.

Todd Crawford, chief meteorologist, said: "The warm and dry summer pattern has persisted across much of northern/western Europe and Scandinavia in July.

"We expect this to continue into August, although there are now some indications that the low pressure ... may give way to higher pressures at some point in August, which would reduce the risks for extreme warmth over at least far western Europe."
