An Australian family have been criticised by animal lovers after agreeing to include their pet cat in a deal that secured the sale of their house.

Michael and Fran Perceval had put their Melbourne home on the market last Saturday and an offer came in for A$2,060,000 (£1,125,000).

Then real estate agent Glen Coutinho said the child of an interested buyer had fallen in love with Tiffany, the family cat, during inspections of the home.

A new offer came in for A$2.2million (£1,256,000) - as long as Tiffany was included in the sale.

The Percevals, who had bought Tiffany from a pet shop, agreed, but their son, Sam, 19, wasn’t pleased about it and the couple said they were still “negotiating” with him.

But animal lovers reacted angrily when the story of the cat facing abandonment to allow a house sale to go through was published in Melbourne’s Herald Sun today.

“These people would probably sell their kid if offered enough,’ said one writer to the paper’s comment page. “Your pet is your family. Obviously the dollar is more important to them.”

“This is heartbreaking,” wrote another. “The cat will be missed and the cat will also feel stressed with new owners. Bad move.”

She admitted it would be sad to say goodbye to Tiffany, the ‘A$140,000 cat’. “She’s a bit of a princess. She’s beautiful to look at. ..It is quite difficult to part with her.”

The couple said they were now considering adopting a cat from the RSPCA when they move to their new home
